Two people are dead after a police chase ended in a crash on Harvard Avenue in Cleveland Tuesday morning.

A 2010 Chevrolet Cobalt being chased by Shaker Heights police crashed into a tree at East 151st Street and Harvard Avenue around 2:20 a.m., according to authorities.

The chase started when an officer spotted the Cobalt traveling at a high rate of speed on Warrensville Center Road near Norwood Road, Shaker Heights police said.

The car went westbound on Harvard Avenue into Cleveland. The driver tried to change course onto East 151st Street and struck a tree, police said.

Police said the Cobalt was reported stolen out of Cleveland on Monday.

According to the police report, the car was taken from the 2160 block of West 105th Street when a Western Reserve Catering driver stopped to make a delivery. Western Reserve Catering delivers food to senior citizens and adults with disabilities. 

The driver told police that before he could exit his vehicle, a man grabbed him by the arm and pulled him out of the car. Another man jumped in the passenger seat on the two drove off.

The car was torn into four large pieces and debris was scattered in five front yards from East 151st Street to East 150th Street along Harvard Avenue.

Both the driver and passenger were pronounced dead at the scene.
