CLEVELAND — A Cleveland neighborhood came together to honor the life of a man who was shot and killed at his home earlier this week.

On Monday, police responded to the 3500 block of West 50th Street just after midnight for a report of a man shot. The man, later identified as 32-year-old Jerry Ward, was pronounced dead at the scene.

Police said someone knocked on Ward’s door, shot him in the chest and killed him—all while his 9-year-old son was inside the home.

According to witnesses, men fled in a car after the shooting.

Ward’s family described him as a state wrestling champion, a hard worker and the best dad ever.

Friends and family of Ward held a vigil to honor him on Friday evening, waiting for police to solve the case.

“We’ve got to get justice for Jerry because this wasn't supposed to happen, not at all,’ said Ward’s father Jerry. “I laid my son to rest yesterday.”

The shooting remains under investigation.
