CLEVELAND — A warrant has been issued for a man who allegedly kidnapped his ex-girlfriend at Public Square earlier in April and attacked her as he drove around Cleveland, according to a report from Cleveland police.

William McAlpine, 67, of Maple Heights, is charged with kidnapping, a third-degree felony, for an incident on April 2, according to court records from Cleveland Municipal Court. Police said he is not in custody, but a warrant has been issued for his arrest.

A 41-year-old woman from East Cleveland said she was attempting to meet a friend downtown near Jack’s Casino on Detroit Avenue when she saw McAlpine. She told police she had dated for about two months and had not seen him since November. He got out of a car, walked towards her, grabbed her and put her in the passenger’s seat of his car, the report says.

She told police that McAlpine climbed in the driver’s seat and drove off at a high rate of speed.

McAlpine drove around downtown Cleveland for approximately 10 minutes before he eventually ended up at the intersection of East 55th Street and Woodland Avenue.

When he briefly stopped in traffic, the 41-year-old woman attempted to get out, but McAlpine hit her in the face several times, the report states.

They continued east on Kinsman Avenue near East 71st Street, where McAlpine again hit her multiple times, the report says. At this point, she was able to leave the vehicle. McAlpine continued eastbound on Kinsman. Police were unable to locate him or his vehicle.

She refused medical treatment when police arrived. The 41-year-old woman told police that McAlpine was known to hang out around high rises located in the area.
