A man died early Sunday after getting shot during a hunting incident, the Ashtabula County Coroner's Office confirmed Wednesday.

Jared Windler, 41, of Saybrook Township, was standing on the ground at the base of a tree, when his friend attempted to pull a loaded muzzleloader rifle up the tree on a rope, the coroner said.

Windler was found Sunday morning near North Bend Road, west of State Route 45 after he was believed to be accidentally shot while out hunting.

A completed autopsy revealed the preliminary cause of death was a gunshot wound to the head.

The case is under investigation by local authorities and the Ohio Department of Natural Resources Wildlife Division.
