2 people die in motorcycle crash in Independence

Posted

Two people were killed in a motorcycle crash on Interstate 77 in Independence Tuesday night, the Ohio State Highway Patrol confirmed.

Shortly after 6 p.m., a 2012 Kawasaki Ninja motorcycle was heading west on Interstate 480 before it exited onto the I-77 northbound ramp.

As the ramp curved to the right, the motorcycle slid off the left side of the ramp, hitting a yield sign.

The impact caused the motorcycle to flip over and travel over I-480 east to I-77 north ramp.

It came to a rest in the grass median that separates the ramps from the I-77 north lanes.

The driver was identified as Peter Nero, 22, of Sagamore Hills. He was ejected from the motorcycle and was pronounced dead at the scene, according to OSHP.

His passenger, Shelby Novak, 19, of Macedonia, was taken to MetroHealth Medical Center but died at the hospital, OSHP confirms.

Both Nero and Novak were wearing helmets and safety gear. The driver had a temporary motorcycle permit but didn't have a motorcycle endorsement.

The crash remains under investigation and unsafe speed is a factor in the crash.
