CLEVELAND — Woodhill Homes dates back to 1940. It’s one of Cleveland’s oldest public housing complexes, and the Cleveland City Planning Commission is hoping to demolish and rebuild it, hoping to propel the people who live there, into a brighter future.

“971, that is the most important number I want to leave you with. That is how many people live at Woodhill Estate. That is how many people we need to provide dignified housing for and opportunities and that is what this plan represents,” said Alex Pesta with City Architecture.

In a virtual city planning committee, city leaders said they’re going to invest nearly $400 million into the Buckeye Woodhill neighborhood.

The plan includes new, low income apartments, senior housing, adding accessible wifi, creating new parks and neighborhood streets and demolishing and rebuilding Woodhill Homes.

Council members chimed in on the virtual meeting saying this is needed in that neighborhood because the area suffers from systematic racism and poverty due to the way it is geographically cut off from the rest of thriving Cleveland neighborhoods.

Cleveland is hoping to get a grant through Housing and Urban Development to help with the demolition and rebuild of Woodhill Homes.
