Police have identified a woman who was shot and killed Saturday morning after she was involved in a two-vehicle crash in Solon.

Solon police identified the woman as 53-year-old Deborah J. Pearl of Twinsburg. The other driver was taken into custody. He was not identified but police say he is a 29-year-old from North Ridgeville. The release of his identity is pending charges, which are expected to be announced on Monday.

Officers responded to reports around 7:20 a.m. that there was a car crash and gunfire near the intersection of Solon Road and Richmond Road.

When officers arrived, they found a man with a 5.56 mm rifle and a woman who had been shot several times and left in the roadway. The man was arrested. The woman was taken to the hospital, where she was pronounced dead at 8:18 a.m.

The case is being investigated by Solon police and the Ohio Attorney General's Bureau of Criminal Identification.

After an investigation, police learned the crash happened after the North Ridgeville man ran a red light. The two vehicles crashed in the intersection and the man's vehicle rolled over several times. Afterwards, the man got out of his overturned vehicle with a rifle and walked over to Pearl's vehicle, shooting her.

Investigators say the man and woman did not know each other. A motive for the shooting was not immediately clear.
