Shortly after 4 p.m. Richmond Heights firefighters responded to 339 Balmoral Drive for an 88-year-old man who had fallen down a ravine in his back yard.

Firefighters said he fell about 30 feet before a tree broke his fall. The elderly man was wearing a medical alert device that contacted 911.

The Hillcrest Technical Rescue Team was called in to extricate the man from the ravine. Crews used a "Stokes Basket" to raise the victim out of the ravine.

Firefighters said had it not been for the medical alert device the victim may have been trapped an undetermined amount of time before anyone reported him missing

The man, who has not been identified, was transported to a nearby hospital in what appeared to be stable condition.
