LAKEWOOD, Ohio — Cities across Northeast Ohio are canceling their scheduled trash collection pickup ahead of frigid temperatures arriving in the area.

City of Cleveland

The City of Cleveland canceled waste collection for Wednesday, Thursday and Friday. Trash pickup will resume next week.

"We don't want our waste collectors out walking in that extreme temperatures. It is a hazard to their health," said a city leader during a news conference on weather preparation Tuesday.

City of Brunswick

The city of Brunswick is canceling trash pickup on Wednesday, Jan. 30 due to extreme weather. Trash pickup will be delayed at least one day. It may also be canceled on Thursday.

City of Strongsville

If you live in Strongsville, Republic Waste will not pick up trash Wednesday, Jan. 30, which will delay pick-up by a day for the rest of the week.

City of Lakewood

The cities of Lakewood and Rocky River are asking residents to consider not placing garbage or recycling bins out this week.

Lakewood said due to the frigid temperatures Wednesday and Thursday, they want residents to wait until next week.

"It's hard on our guys. They're out there doing the best job they can to get the job done,” said Glen Bleich, manager of Refuse and Recycling Division in Lakewood. “We're asking residents if possible, that if you don't need to bring your carts out, please don't. We can get them next week."

With the extreme cold, the lifts are prone to freezing and the equipment moves slower.

As a result, crews are forced to manually empty the carts instead of using the hydraulics of the trucks.

Extended time outside in the negative degree weather puts the employees in an unsafe scenario.

Residents that are able to wait one week for collection should not be concerned about having extra refuse, according to a press release from Lakewood.

Any extra bags or items on the tree lawn will be picked up.

City of Rocky River

Rocky River said they will not be doing collection at all Wednesday and Thursday. The city will be picking up Friday for those days, and will be collecting Saturday for those who usually get collected on Fridays.

City of Brooklyn

The city suggests that if your trash and/or recycling items are not full, hold them until next week.

City of Painesville

Due to the freezing temperatures, they will not be picking up on Wednesday and will run on a one day delay for the rest of the week.

The city of Cuyahoga Falls is urging residents to place sanitation and recycle carts on the curd only if necessary on Wednesday and Thursday.

Residents who choose not to place out their carts on the curb may place additional bags out for collection next week, free of charge.

City of Akron

The city is recommending that residents with trash pickup on Wednesday and Thursday only place trash and recycle carts on the curb if necessary.

If residents are able to forgo, they are encouraged to do so.
