A convicted rapist sentenced to serve thousands of years in an Ohio prison died by suicide last week.
Ronnie Shelton, who was convicted of raping more than 30 women in a string of attacks in Cleveland in the 1980s, suffered a fractured skull when he jumped off a building at Grafton Correctional Institution on Sept. 25. Shelton was pronounced dead at a Cleveland hospital later that day.
Ohio Department of Rehabilitation and Correction spokeswoman Jo Ellen Smith declined to comment, citing an ongoing investigation. County records reviewed Tuesday show investigators do not suspect foul play.
Shelton was found guilty on 220 counts of rape in 1989. The presiding judge sentenced him to anywhere between 1,554 and 3,195 years in prison.
