OLMSTED FALLS, Ohio — For the first time in nearly 30 years, Olmsted Falls police are investigating a homicide inside a condominium that occurred Wednesday night, according to Chief of Police Odis Rogers.
At about 7:45 p.m., police first received a call for a possible assault at Sprague Road near Fernwood Drive.
On scene, officers spoke to a witness who said there may be a person dead inside a condominium on Lake of the Falls Boulevard.
Inside the condominium, police found a 26-year-old man dead from an apparent gunshot wound. Witnesses on scene gave investigators detailed accounts of the shooting.
The 26-year-old man was found dead with multiple gunshot wounds to the torso, according to Rogers.
Thursday afternoon, the Cuyahoga County Medical Examiner's Office identified the victim as Nathaniel L. Edwards.
While investigating the scene, investigators found over 40 pieces of evidence, but police wouldn't say if the murder weapon was among that evidence.
Based on interviews with multiple witnesses at the scene, police believe the victim and the shooter knew of each other. Investigators are still working to confirm if the 26-year-old man lived at the condominium or if he was visiting the complex at the time of shooting.
A neighbor who didn't want to be identified told News 5 that she heard a woman yelling, "Get out, get out," and then heard a scream, followed by what sounded like someone banging on metal last night. She now believes she heard gunshots.
During the news conference, Rogers said there is no indication the homicide is a drug-related crime.
When Rogers was asked when the last homicide was in Olmsted Falls, he said, "That's an interesting question. Nobody in Olmsted Falls can remember a homicide. It's been at least more than 30 years."
Police said the alleged shooter fled the scene in a white Nissan. Authorities said they have reliable information the alleged shooter left the city and does not pose any threats to Olmsted Falls residents.
"I can tell you that this very violent crime that occurred has nothing to do with the community," said Rogers. "It has to do with what occurred inside that condo between those people."
Multiple law enforcement agencies are working with police to apprehend the shooter.
The Olmsted Falls Police Department, the Ohio Bureau of Criminal Investigation and the Cuyahoga County Medical Examiner's Officer are investigating.
