On Saturday, Shorter walked into the lobby of the Parma police station and told an officer he wanted to turn himself in for a crime.
Shorter had visible self-inflicted lacerations on both of his arms, according to police.
Police discovered the child in the trunk of Shorter's car. One-year-old Nicholas Shorter appeared to have been stabbed in the chest, according to police.
Police said the case remains under investigation as detectives work to reconstruct the events that led up to the child's death.
