Lakewood police are investigating after a person was struck and killed by a train in Lakewood Monday morning.

Lakewood police were notified by Norfolk Southern Railroad Police shortly after 2:30 a.m. that a person was hit by a train going eastbound.

While checking the area, officers discovered a body near Cranford Avenue in Lakewood, police said.

The person was identified as a 29-year-old Cleveland man, according to the Cuyahoga County Medical Examiner's Office.

The railroad crew reported seeing the man on the tracks as they approached him traveling eastbound.

The man did not move and was struck by the train, police said.

The investigation is ongoing and the cause of death has not yet been released.

Authorities originally blocked off all railroad crossings from the western city limits through Cook Avenue.

The train has been cleared from the area and all roads have reopened as of 7 a.m.
