AKRON — A 19-year-old man was rushed to the hospital in Akron following an officer-involved shooting on Tuesday, according to the Akron Police Department.
It happened on Tuesday morning around 12:23 a.m. in the area of Manchester Road and Kenmore Boulevard.
In a press release, police said the incident began when patrol officers attempted to make a traffic stop on a vehicle that didn't have license plates. The vehicle failed to stop and took off instead.
Police initiated a chase, but it only lasted for approximately 30 seconds before it was called off due to speed.
The vehicle was found at Manchester Road and Kenmore Boulevard, where the driver hit a telephone pole.
While approaching the vehicle officers spotted the man slumped over the steering wheel and immediately called for medical help. Police said that's when the man exited the vehicle and began making movements toward the officers. Officers discharged their weapons, striking the man.
The man was rushed to the hospital, however officials have not yet released his current condition.
Three officers were involved in the incident. One officer has almost thirteen years of service and the other two officers have almost two years of service. Per departmental procedure, the officers involved will be placed on paid administrative leave.
