Smash and grabs start up in suburbs

Posted

Glass was shattered and store fronts were destroyed. There have been more and more smash and grabs, and smash and grab attempts, in the Cleveland area. But it's the first Willoughby has seen in years.

It happened at Lost Nation Fuel on Monday.

You can see in the store's surveillance video that a man smashed the front door's glass with a crowbar and went straight for the ATM. When he didn't find cash inside, he quickly got back to his car.

Willoughby Detective James Schultz told NewsChannel 5 the man didn't make it out with a thing.

"There's a strong possibility he's gonna try another place. It's a felony case. We'd like to bring him to justice and resolve this," Schultz said.

The man was wearing a mask, so may be tough to recognize. Police say he was driving a white or light colored Audi SUV.

He will face breaking and entering and vandalism charges.
