CLEVELAND — A third-grade girl who was getting off a school bus was struck by a passing vehicle Thursday afternoon, according to Cleveland police.

The incident occurred in the area of West 73rd Street and Dearborn Avenue.

The girl, who is a third-grade student at Waverly Elementary School, was getting off the school bus when a vehicle drove around the bus and struck her.

The 9-year-old girl was transported to MetroHealth Hospital.

Police said the 9-year-old had surgery and has non-life threatening injuries.

The driver of the vehicle that struck the girl drove away, according to police.

Police said they believe they have located what they think is the car but no arrests have been made.

A neighbor, Denise McCoy, shared doorbell camera footage with News 5 that she also shared with police, hoping it could help them find the driver. The video shows a Kia Soul or similar type of vehicle behind the school bus, and officers said that is what they were searching for on Thursday afternoon.

“Oh, I just hope they find whoever did this, honestly," McCoy said. "I mean, it’s very sad, and you see a mother standing out there just crying the way she was, [and] yeah, nothing could be good out of it unless they find this person right now.”
