CLEVELAND HEIGHTS, Ohio — A car swerved onto the sidewalk in Cleveland Heights Friday morning, plowing through several parking meters and an RTA bus stop before coming to a stop in oncoming traffic.
Dramatic video from surveillance cameras at the scene shows the car drifting from the center lane to the curb lane before jumping onto the sidewalk, hitting the parking meters, completely destroying a bus stop. Debris from the bus stop flew into a the window of a business at the corner, causing the glass to break. The car then turned the and came to a stop in the middle of the intersecting street. Two men can then be seen getting out of the smoking car as police arrive.
According to the Cleveland Heights police report, an officer arrived at the intersection of Cedar Road and Taylor Road to find the vehicle stopped on Taylor Road with severe front-end damage and smoke rising from the hood. The officer then saw two men exit the vehicle from the driver’s side.
The driver told police he believed there was a vehicle in the lane next to him trying to merge into his lane, causing him to veer right onto the sidewalk and through the parking meters and bus stop.
A witness told police that he saw the crash, and noted that the driver appeared to be asleep while driving through the bus stop.
Both men in the car were evaluated and refused transport to the hospital, the police report states. The driver showed no signs of being under the influence of drugs or alcohol.
Cleveland Heights police said the matter is under investigation at this time.
