EUCLID, Ohio — A woman is in jail after throwing a cat off a 17th story balcony Sunday night, according to the Euclid Police Department.

Officers were called to the Harbor Crest apartments in 24400 block of Lakeshore Boulevard around 11:19 p.m. for a report of a domestic dispute between roommates.

When officers arrived on the scene, they learned that the two roommates were arguing and it had turned into a physical altercation, police said.

During the fight, one of the roommates, Melissa Thornton, 24, picked up a bicycle and threw it off the balcony into the parking lot, according to police.

Thornton then picked up their cat and threw it off the balcony into the parking lot as well, police said.

Officers found the cat critically injured 17 floors below the two women’s balcony.

Police said the cat was suffering severely, so officers were forced to euthanize it.

Thornton was arrested and charged with a felony count of cruelty to animals. She appeared in court Monday where her bond was set at $5,000, according to police.

Thornton has a preliminary hearing scheduled for August 20.
