SANDUSKY, Ohio — The sunflowers at the Sandusky Maria's Field of Hope are beginning to bloom, Prayers for Maria announced Saturday.
The garden of sunflowers aimed at raising awareness about childhood cancer gained a second location in June that is now beginning to bloom for the first time.
Sandusky's Maria's Field of Hope is located next to Cedar Point's Express Hotel at 1201 Cedar Point Drive.
The original field, located at 34925 Chester Road in Avon, has been an anchor of inspiration for cancer survivors and their families. It was started by the McNamara family who lost their 7-year-old daughter Maria after she was diagnosed with a rare and aggressive tumor called diffused intrinsic pontine glioma.
Since her death, the McNamara family has set up the Prayers for Mariaorganization to help fund childhood cancer research and to continue her legacy that she left behind.
Now in its fifth season, the beautiful sunflower fields are a hot spot for photographers and people looking for prime social media content.
Prayers for Maria said that the original field in Avon still needs a few more weeks before it fully blooms.
