A child was killed in a two-vehicle accident with reported entrapment in Auburn Township Monday afternoon, according to officials. Four others were injured, including another small child who was air-lifted with life-threatening injuries.

A 2017 Ford Escape operated by a female driver was traveling south on Munn Road, according to a news release from the Department of Public Safety. A 2005 Honda Accord operated by a female driver, with a female passenger and two small children in car seats in the rear, was traveling east on Washington Street. The preliminary investigation shows both vehicles collided in the intersection, and the Accord was pushed into a pole and utility box.

Paisley Vanek, 3, of Garrettsville, sustained fatal injuries, authorities confirmed. The other child was air-lifted to Cleveland MetroHealth Medical Center for life-threatening injuries. The driver of the Escape sustained minor injuries and was released from the hospital.

Geauga County Sheriff’s Department and Auburn Fire were on scene assisting. Everyone was out of the vehicles when crews arrived on scene, thanks to civilian help, according to Auburn Township Assistant Fire Chief Make Cardaman.

The crash is still under investigation by the Chardon Patrol Post of the Ohio State Highway Patrol, and anyone who witnessed the crash is asked to contact them.
