GEAUGA COUNTY, Ohio — A local animal shelter wants to remind pet owners about how hot asphalt can get in the summer.

Friends of the Geauga County Dog Shelter & Warden's Office posted that if temperatures are higher than 77 degrees, it can ruin a dog's skin within a minute.

Some other tips for pet owners on hot days:

  • Provide plenty of water and shade.
  • Save long walks for the early morning, late evening.
  • Place your palm on the ground to make sure it’s not too for your dog’s paws.
