GEAUGA COUNTY, Ohio — A Mentor police officer was involved in a crash while transporting a prisoner Wednesday afternoon.
The crash happened on State Route 44 at US 322 in Geauga County around 12:30 p.m.
The officer was driving with a prisoner he picked up from the Geauga County Sheriff's Office.
On the way back to Mentor, the prisoner began complaining about a medical issue, police said.
The officer turned around to drive back to University Hospital Geauga Medical Center, which was about a mile away.
He was driving with lights on and sirens activated when he struck a Mitsubishi Eclipse that was driving wast on US 322.
The two passengers in the Mitsubishi refused medical attention.
Both vehicles sustained significant damage.
The officer and prisoner were transported to a hospital, where they were both treated and released.
