HOLMES COUNTY, Ohio — The Ohio State Highway Patrol used an infrared camera from a helicopter to locate a missing elderly woman with dementia in Holmes County on Wednesday.
The Holmes County Sheriff’s Office requested the assistance from the patrol’s aviation unit. A helicopter responded to the area and shortly after arriving was able to locate the woman in a bog area using infrared technology. First responders were in contact with the helicopter, which directed ground crews to the woman’s location.
The Ohio State Highway Patrol's Aviation unit consists of 16 uniformed flight crew personnel members, three helicopters and 14 airplanes. The aviation unit uses Forward Looking Infrared to search for traffic violators, fugitives on the run and helps search for missing patients from nursing homes and lost children.
