New London police tell newsnet5.com that new owners of a barn in New London discovered a pile of human bones over the weekend.
Cortney Hoffer said that she and her husband recently purchased the property that included the barn. While sorting through the barn’s contents, they discovered the pile of 79 bones on the upper level.
“I walked over with an officer and I realized they were human remains so immediately we had a crime scene,” said New London Police Chief Michael Marko.
The bones include parts of a skull, two femurs, ribs and other bone fragments. Marko said he believes the remains are female and that they have been there for at least 30 years.
According to property records, former New London Mayor Darwin Anderson owned the property until his death in 2015.
Neighbors near the scene remember an old doctor’s office that used to stand next to the barn and believe the bones may have come from the office. Marko said the building was demolished in 1998 after a fire and investigators are looking into that lead.
The bones have been collected by the Bureau of Criminal Investigations for further testing. Results could take several weeks.
