LORAIN, Ohio — A 40-year-old man was killed while riding a motorized bicycle in Lorain on Tuesday.

Police responded Tuesday at around 1:07 p.m. to the intersection of Fulton Road and East 28th Street for a serious injury crash involving a bicycle.

Investigators determined a motorized Huffy mountain bicycle, equipped with a 50cc engine, was traveling northbound on Fulton Road approaching the intersection when it lost control during a left-hand turn.

The bicycle went off the left side of the road and collided with a utility pole. The impact ejected the bicyclist, causing him to hit a utility pole before landing on the sidewalk.

The bicyclist was identified as Michael Mac Mahan, 40, of Lorain. He was life-flighted to MetroHealth Medical Center where he died from his injuries while undergoing treatment.

Police said he was not wearing a helmet. Alcohol and drugs are not suspected as factors in the crash.

This is the fifth traffic-related fatal crash this year in Lorain.
