ELYRIA, Ohio — An Elyria man was sentenced this week to three years of probation for pushing his car over a cliff last year in a futile attempt at committing insurance fraud.
Randall D. White, 53, was sentenced Wednesday having previously pleaded guilty to insurance fraud, inducing panic, making false alarms and falsification, according to court records.
Lorain County Court of Common Pleas Judge Christopher Rothgery sentenced White to three years of community control and ordered him to pay back more than $10,000 in restitution and court fees.
The charges stem from an Oct. 10, 2018, incident where authorities were called to the 1500 block of West River Road in Elyria for a car that went over a cliff behind a restaurant.
First responders rappelled down to the car to find out if there was anyone inside the vehicle.
According to authorities, when the car was traced back to White, he told them that he had last seen the car parked in front of his apartment. He said he thought it was stolen and filed a police report.
During the investigation, police discovered security camera footage that showed White pushing the car over the cliff's edge and into the river below.
