AMHERST, Ohio — A 61-year-old man who was allegedly hiking while drunk was arrested after he called 911 because he was lost in the woods for nearly 12 hours, according to the Lorain County Sheriff’s Office.
On Monday at around 10:42 p.m., the Lorain County Sheriff’s Office and the Amherst fire and police departments responded to the 7500 block of Leavitt Road in Amherst Township for a report of a lost hiker.
The lost hiker, identified as a 61-year-old Amherst resident, called 911 after he became lost in the private Dolyk Nature Preserve, located off Middle Ridge Road.
The hiker told deputies that he was dropped off by a family member and had been in the woods since 11 a.m.
Metro Life-Flight assisted ground units in locating the lost hiker.
When deputies located the hiker, a strong odor of alcohol was coming from his breath, and he appeared to have a difficult time keeping his balance, deputies said. He admitted to drinking.
He was charged with inducing panic, a first-degree misdemeanor, disorderly conduct and public intoxication, both fourth-degree misdemeanor.
