LORAIN COUNTY, Ohio — The Lorain County Sheriff’s Office is warning residents about scam phone calls that have been reported across the county where the caller pretends to be part of the Sheriff’s Office and then seeks to gain personal information.
The call shows up from number 440-363-6354 and the caller identifies himself as Lorain County Sheriff's Office Deputy Cannon, according to authorities. The scam involves the caller telling residents they failed to show up for jury duty and is then followed up with requests for personal information such as birth dates and social security numbers.
Authorities said the number that shows up is actually disconnected, and the Sheriff’s Office doesn’t employ anyone named Cannon. Additionally, the Sheriff’s Office doesn’t reach out to residents by phone regarding jury duty.
Anyone who receives a scam call is asked to call their local police department. Anyone with questions regarding the identity of someone who says they are from the Sheriff’s Office can contact the communications department at 440-329-3710 to verify who they are speaking with.
