Avon Lake has banned the use of tobacco in city-owned parks and on city property.
The prohibition in city parks went into effect on Tuesday. It was deemed an emergency measure, because officials wanted the ordinance in place for the summer months for the public health, safety and welfare. It went into effect immediately after it was passed.
The prohibition on city property will not go into effect until January 1, 2019. This includes all land owned or managed by the city, but does not include city streets.
Anyone who violates these restrictions will be guilty of a minor misdemeanor.
