ELYRIA, Ohio — Former Avon Fire Chief Frank Root Jr. was arraigned at the Lorain County Court of Common Pleas Thursday morning.

He pleaded not guilty to charges of pandering obscenity involving a minor and pandering sexually oriented matter involving a minor or impaired person.

He was indicted on those charges earlier this month.

Root was the Avon fire chief from 1990 until 2006, when his son, Frank Root III was made the new chief.

Root is scheduled to appear in court on Jan. 8 for a pre-trial hearing.
