LORAIN, Ohio — It started with a simple piece of wood, and with the help of volunteers, pieces of wood became beds for children in need across Lorain County over the weekend.

The organization Sleep in Heavenly Peace is on a mission to build beds for children who otherwise would never have a bed of their own.

On Saturday, volunteers held a building event to put 30 bunk beds together for children in Lorain County.

"When I was growing up as a kid, I was one of the kids that was sleeping on the floor. Not out of any fault of my mother's, single mom, we had seven kids and three adults living in the house, typically I spent the night sleeping in a closet," said Roger Dorsey, Lorain County Chapter President of Sleep in Heavenly Peace.

Since the Lorain chapter of Sleep in Heavenly Peace started in July 2018, they have built more than 200 beds.

The chapter is facing a supply-demand problem as they have received more than 500 bed requests. They say their biggest obstacle is money, but they are also in need of sheets, blankets, pillows and raw lumber.

If you would like to donate, you can visit them at 179 Valley Forge Circle in Elyria or call them at: (208) 749-4871.
