A man and a woman died, and the man's grandson was injured, after a boat struck a steel wall near the Lorain Lighthouse on the Fourth of July, according to officials.
The deceased victims were identified as 54-year-old Timothy Moore and 49-year-old Penny Nickeson by the Lorain County Coroner's Office.
The U.S. Coast Guard responded to a 20-foot power boat that was involved in an accident around 10:37 p.m. The powerboat struck a steel breakwall on Lake Erie at a high rate of speed, according to the Ohio Department of Natural Resources.
Three people were removed from the boat, officials said. Moore and Nickeson were seriously injured. Moore's 10-year-old grandson was treated for minor injuries.
All three were taken to the Lorain Coast Guard Station. Moore died from injuries and Nickeson was unresponsive but had a pulse, according to the authorities. She was taken to a nearby hospital where she later died.
Another grandparent picked up the child. No further information was released.
