A state trooper was hospitalized after his ear was partially bitten off when he was assaulted Thursday morning after he responded to a call about a man walking in the roadway.

The incident happened just after 7 a.m. on Nickel Plate Diagonal Road near Biggs Road in LaGrange Township.

LaGrange is a town in Lorain County, a few miles southeast of Oberlin.

Authorities said the trooper responded to the area after a caller reported a man, later identified as 44-year-old Cornelious L. Carey, walking in the roadway.

The caller told police the man appeared drunk and she was worried about him getting hit by a car.

When the trooper found Carey and approached him, Carey became confrontational and started hitting him in the face and bit off a part of the trooper's left ear, authorities said.

The trooper was able to subdue Carey and place him in handcuffs. Responding deputies from the Lorain County Sheriff's Office arrived and helped the man into custody.

Another woman who witnessed the attacked called 911.

"An officer is being attacked," she said. "The officer is all bloody on his face. Please send somebody."

Carey was charged with felonious assault and taken to Lorain County Jail. He is scheduled to appear in court on Jan. 12.

The trooper was transported to a nearby hospital with serious injuries, authorities said.
