Posted

A 42-year-old Westlake man hit by a train Wednesday morning has been hospitalized, according to North Ridgeville police.

The incident happened just after 8 a.m. about 500 feet away from the Chestnut Ridge Road crossing. Norfolk Southern Railroad dispatch called the police to report a person lying on the tracks who had just been hit. The train engineer spotted the man but was unable to stop the train in time, authorities said.

According to police, the man was driving a 2015 BMW X5 eastbound on State Route 10 when he stopped his car on the railroad overpass. When police arrived, they found the car empty with the engine still running. Officers located the man below the underpass lying on the railroad tracks. He was awake and had a head injury, police said.

The man was transported to University Hospitals St. John Medical Center and then flown to MetroHealth Medical Center in Cleveland.

Police have not released the man's name or condition. It's not known why he left his car and was on the tracks. No additional information has been released.
