A gas station in Carlisle Township was the scene of an officer-involved shooting that erupted in a hail of bullets Tuesday afternoon. Officials have confirmed one person is in critical condition.
The Lorain County Sheriff's Office said Elyria police were called to a report of shots fired on Park Meadow Lane.
Officers followed a dark-colored Chevrolet Impala from the apartment complex to a gas station in the 1400 block of East Avenue.
According to the authorities, officers initiated a traffic stop, ordering the passengers inside the vehicle to exit with their hands up.
Deputies said after a few minutes, the right rear door opened and a passenger inside the vehicle apparently moved to the back seat and pointed a firearm at the officers after opening the door.
Officers opened fire on the passengers after seeing the weapon, deputies said.
There were several occupants in the vehicle, but authorities did not say how many.
The occupants of the vehicle were injured and transported to University Hospitals and Mercy Hospital in unknown conditions, according to the Lorain County Sheriff's Office.
None of the officers involved were injured in the shooting.
Dozens of shell casings could be seen littering the scene.
