Republic Steel will lay off 200 workers at its Lorain facility, the company announced Thursday.
The layoffs will be staggered over the next few months and most will be completed during the first quarter.
The layoffs are the result of a temporary idle at the plant due to a negative 2016 economic forecast, the company wrote in a press release.
The layoffs come a tough time for the City of Lorain, which is already facing a 2.3 million dollar budget deficeit in 2016.
According to Lorain Mayor Chase Rietnauer his city lost one million dollars in tax base due to 700 steel layoffs in 2015, and now Lorain may have to layoff 20% of its safety forces in the coming months.
Meanwhile Republic Steel added that it hopes to resume operations in the "near future."
Republic Steel will continue to employ 900 in Canton, Massillon, Solon, Lackawanna (N.Y.) and Hamilton (Ontario).
