ELYRIA, Ohio — Search crews in Elyria have left the Black River Thursday after searching for a group of juveniles who allegedly were thought to be in the Black River, the Elyria Fire Department said in a news release.

Shortly after 9:00 p.m., search teams searched the Black River in Elyria after a homeowner told officials the kids were shooting BB guns at his house and he chased them toward the river. He told police he heard screams for help, went home for a rope and couldn't find them again.

When Elyria fire first responded, they were told 3 to 4 juveniles were in the water. Crews began to light up the river banks, and began shore based searches along the bank.

The Lorain County Swift Water team was requested to assist members of the Elyria Fire Department Rescue Team.

Elyria fire said two additional witness interviews indicated that a single, large man with a high visibility or reflective shirt was in the water or near the river bank. When the witness left the area to call for help and returned, the man was nowhere to be found.

Police canvassed the area door to door to find out if anyone was reported missing.

The water rescue team conducted a more detailed shore based search from the last seen location. Search teams entered the water but did not locate anyone at this time, according to the press release.

The search was stopped around midnight and Elyria police has not received any reports of missing persons. If anyone has additional information, call Elyria Police at 440-323-4815.
