Tips on how to stay cool during this heat wave

LORAIN COUNTY, Ohio — With an Excessive Heat Warning in place, the Lorain County Public Health Department has given a few tips on how to stay cool.

  • Spend less time outside when possible.
  • Drink plenty of fluids.
  • Eat light foods.
  • Wear lightweight clothing
  • Take a cool bath
  • Avoid getting sunburned
  • Give children and older adults plenty of fluids
  • Check on older adults and children regularly.
  • Remember to never leave pets and children in cars, even with the windows cracked open.
  • Stay in air-conditioned buildings as much as possible.
  • If your home does not have an air conditioner, visit a mall or library.
  • Do not rely on a fan as your main cooling source.
  • Keep your house cool by not using the stove or open.
  • Protect yourself from the sun by using a hat or sunglasses.
  • Know the symptoms of heat-related illnesses
  • Provide plenty of fresh water to pets
  • Check the news for heat advisories
  • Have a "Beat the Heat Buddy"
  • Take precautions if you have heart disease.
  • Seek care for heat-related symptoms like cramps or nausea
