A toddler has died as a result of a crash on State Route 2 in Lorain County earlier this month that already took a 12-year-old's life, according to the Cuyahoga County Medical Examiner's Office.
Authorities said 1-year-old Daniel Turner died at University Hospitals Cleveland Medical Center. The medical examiner received his body on Saturday.
The crash happened around 2:29 p.m. in Amherst Township on Aug. 8 and involved five vehicles. The eastbound lanes of SR 2 between State Route 58 and Broadway Avenue were closed as a result. After the crash, the boy was flown to Rainbow Babies and Children's Hospital with incapacitating injuries, authorities said.
According to the Ohio State Highway Patrol, an International 4300 box truck, 2007 Jeep Liberty and a 2012 Subaru Forester were traveling eastbound when the box truck rear-ended the Jeep Liberty and pushed it into the Subaru Forester, which in turn was pushed into a nearby Chevrolet Silverado. A Jeep Grand Cherokee was also hit by flying debris.
The two children who died from injuries from this crash were in the Jeep Liberty, which was rear-ended by the box truck.
Troopers expect drug use was a factor in the crash. The incident remains under investigation. Charges are pending based on the results of the investigation.
