WELLINGTON, Ohio — The Wellington Police chief says the justice system failed the victim of a Tuesday shooting.

The shooting happened in the 600 block of Main Street at 4 p.m. near Boos Make and Take.

Police said Scott Brant drove to the business where his wife worked and shot her, before killing himself.

She was flown to Metro Hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.

Brant was recently arrested on domestic violence charges and was being investigated on felony and federal weapons violations related to those charges.

The department released the following statement on the shooting:

"The Wellington Police Department feels that the system failed our victim in this case. At the time the domestic violence charges were filed the court was made aware of factors which indicated a felony was being investigated and that a lethality assessment was completed on the case indicating that the suspect, Scott Brant, was a real risk to the victim in this case. The Department was working with the Lorain County Prosecutor’s Office and federal authorities to try and complete those investigations quickly because of the perceived threat."
