The 44-year-old son of the North Royalton couple who was found shot to death over the weekend has been taken into custody in Medina County and is being called a "person of interest" by police.
The son was found by police at about 2 p.m. at a Super 8 motel near Medina. He was found in possession of his parents' cell phones and a semi-automatic handgun. He has not yet been charged.
The North Royalton Police Department is investigating after the couple was found dead inside their bedroom with multiple gunshot wounds, police confirmed Monday.
Helen and Dennis Lucak, both 72 years old, were found dead at their residence in the 11800 block of Harbor Light Drive.
Based on what investigators gathered at the scene, the couple was killed and locked in their bedroom after both appeared to have suffered multiple gunshot wounds, police said.
Police said the gunman did not appear to break into the couple's home, and the motive for the murders is still unclear.
"Sometimes it takes a little bit of work and understanding and getting to know more about the family and so forth to establish that," said Detective Dave Loeding of the North Royalton Police Department.
Loeding says officers were called to the family's home a couple of years ago for a domestic argument involving the couple and their son, but that no one was arrested and it did not appear the son had a criminal history.
"It had to be somebody that knew them because she would have never opened the door for anybody," said Terry Anderson, a neighbor who lived next to the Lucaks for more than 15 years. "She was very cautious, a wonderful woman and they were a very wonderful couple, so I still don't understand what happened."
