Alliance woman dies in Perry Township crash involving tractor trailer and 2 motorcycles

A woman died Saturday morning and two men were injured when a commercial tractor trailer drove off U.S. 30 in Perry Township and struck their motorcycles, according to Ohio highway patrol.

Marcy J. Simchak, 41, of Alliance, a passenger on one of the motorcycles, was fatally injured. The Stark County Coroner's office pronounced her dead. 
 
A 50-year-old man, who was operating the motorcycle she was riding on, was injured and transported to Aultman Hospital.
 
A 31-year-old man was operating another motorcycle and received minor injuries. He was not taken to a hospital. His passenger, a 29-year-old woman, was also not transported; but it is unknown if she was injured.
 
All the motorcyclists were from Alliance. None of them wore helmets, according to the highway patrol's Canton Post.
 
Troopers stated that Michael Smelik, Jr., 53, of Bexar, Texas was driving a Volvo tractor trailer westbound in the left lane of U.S. 30 when he drove off the left side of the the roadway into the median at about 9:15 a.m. Then he struck two Harley Davidson motorcycles, which were stopped in an emergency turnaround, according to authorities.
 
Smelik was wearing a safety restraint and was not injured.
 
The crash remains under investigation. Alcohol is not a factor in the crash, according to authorities.
