Canton police are warning residents to locks their doors and windows after a burglar broke into four homes while people were sleeping and stole wallets and purses.

The break-ins happened between midnight and 4 a.m. on Bellflower, Rosalyn and Linwood Avenues in the southwest section of town.

Police suspect the same crook is responsible for all of the creepy crimes and gained entry by crawling through windows or walking through unlocked doors.

The victims didn't report hearing any noises but woke up to find purses or wallets stolen.

Traci Newman, who has two children and is pregnant, said the intruder put a neighbor's chair up to a kitchen window, crawled inside and stole a wallet from her purse.

"The past two nights I have not been able to sleep, and being pregnant you already can't sleep, so adding that to it has just been awful," Newman said. "Every shadow, every little creak, noise, everything, I just jump."

Acting Police Chief Dave Davis said the burglaries are alarming and dangerous.

"Dangerous for the individual as well, not knowing if those people are gun owners," Davis said.

Davis said detectives are following leads, but have not named any suspects.

Police are also reviewing older, unsolved burglaries to see if there are any connections to the latest incidents.
