An employee of North Canton City Schools was arrested Tuesday morning, accused of two counts of sexual battery.

Matthew Johnsen, 40, was arrested on a warrant from Stark County Common Pleas. He was arrested by a North Canton Police Detective with the help of the U.S. Marshal Service. He was booked at the Stark County Jail.

Superintendent Jeff Wendorf of the North Canton City Schools confirms Johnsen is an employee. Wendorf says North Canton City Schools will be investigating the situation with advisement from legal counsel.

New details reveal that Johnson has been the head swimming coach for at least 15 years. He's also an English teacher.

Stark County Prosecutors tell the Canton Repository that the allegations involve two 16-year-old girls he coached between 2006 and 2008.

He's received multiple awards including Girls Stark County Coach of the Year in 2016. Johnson was also inducted into the Stark County Swimming and Diving Hall of Fame.

Bail was denied Wednesday due to the severity of the charges.
