An Akron man was sentenced to life in prison with the possibility for parole after he pleaded guilty to raping a young girl, the Summit County Prosecutor's Office confirmed Tuesday in a news release.
Raymond Smiley, 39, of Akron, was sentenced by Summit County Common Pleas Court Judge Christine Croce to life in prison. Smiley will be eligible for parole after serving 20 years in prison.
On Oct. 23, Smiley pleaded guilty to two counts of rape, a felony of the first degree.
He admitted to raping the young girl on two separate occasions, the prosecutor's office said.
“What this defendant did was horrifying. I am very grateful he will spend a significant amount of time in prison where he won’t be able to hurt innocent young girls,” said Prosecutor Walsh in a news release. “The survivor and her mother showed tremendous strength in standing up to him."
If he is released from prison, Smiley will have to register as a Tier III sex offender with the local sheriff's office every 90 days for the rest of his life, according to the Summit County prosecutor.
