The Canton post of the Ohio State Highway Patrol is investigating a fatal car crash that killed two people in Copley Township Saturday night.

According to the OSHP, the crash occurred around 8:30 p.m. on Hametown Road, just north of Copley Road.

Authorities said a 2006 Nissan 800 Z, occupied by 21-year-old Alec M. Leatherman, of Wadsworth, and 19-year-old Halle N. Schmidt, of Copley, was traveling northbound at a "high rate of speed" when the car lost control and drove off the left side of the roadway.

The car then struck a ditch and several trees, before overturning and coming to a stop on its roof.

The OSHP said Leatherman and Schmidt were trapped inside the car and were removed by mechanical means. They were both pronounced dead at the scene.

The incident is under investigation.
