WAYNE COUNTY, Ohio — A 56-year-old man was killed in a two-vehicle crash Monday on State Route 585 in Chippewa Township, located in Wayne County, according to a release from the Ohio State Highway Patrol.

Troopers responded at around 5:21 p.m. to a crash on State Route 585, just north of Steiner road.

Initial information indicated a 2004 Chevy Silverado, driven by a 76-year-old man from Creston, Ohio, was traveling southbound on State Route 585 behind a Dodge Grand Caravan driven by Richard Szafran, 56, of Smithville, Ohio.

Troopers said the 76-year-old man failed to maintain a clear distance ahead, causing him to hit the Grand Caravan from behind. Both vehicles traveled across the centerline off the left side of the road and struck several trees.

Szafran was pronounced dead at the scene. His passenger, a 53-year-old woman from Orrville, was transported to Akron General Hospital for treatment. Her condition is unknown at this time.

The 76-year-old man was transported to Akron General Hospital by the Rittman Fire Department.

Alcohol does not seem to be a factor in the crash.
