A Wayne County school resource officer stunned a student with a Taser inside the Wayne County Career Center in Smithville on Tuesday.

According to Wayne County Sheriff's Department Capt. Doug Hunter, a 17-year-old student got into a verbal argument with the dean of students over a dress code violation around 1:30 p.m.

The student stormed out of the office. The school resource officer was made aware of the situation and encountered the teenager, Hunter explained.

The student threatened to punch the officer near the cafeteria. That's when the officer activated his Taser to prevent the situation from escalating any further, Hunter said.

The officer activated his Taser twice, but the probes only came into contact with the student once.

The officer has not been suspended, but has been told not to report to the school on Wednesday. He was not wearing a body camera at the time.

The student was checked out by EMS, which had responded to the school, but the boy did not go to the hospital.

An internal investigation is underway.
