LORAIN, Ohio — The U.S. Marshals Service have arrested a person of interest sought in connection with a hit-skip crash that happened in Lorain last week and claimed the life of an unborn child.

The person has been identified as 23-year-old Rolland Scales. The crash happened around 11:30 p.m. on Aug. 21 near the intersection of West 21st Street and Ashland Avenue in Lorain.

According to the Lorain Police Department, a person driving a rented Cadillac SUV blew through a stop sign at the intersection and hit a Kia Forte driven by a 29-year-old mother. The woman’s 10-year-old and 5-year-old sons were also in the vehicle.

The impact pushed the Kia several yards down the street and caused the SUV to flip over. The SUV’s driver crawled out of the wreckage and fled the area on foot.

The 10-year-old was flown to a hospital in Cleveland for treatment. The 5-year-old was treated at a nearby hospital and released.

The woman’s unborn child died as a result of the crash. She was six months pregnant when the crash occurred, according to authorities.

Investigators said they were able to obtain DNA from the SUV at the crash site. Additionally, authorities said a cell phone and gun were recovered from the crash.

Scales was arrested in Scioto County Wednesday night.

Anyone with information about the crash is asked to call Lorain police at (440) 204-2115.
