The U.S.S. Cod isn’t just a museum. It’s not just a memorial. It’s a link to our nation’s past. And that past was celebrated Wednesday, on the 80th anniversary of the Cod being commissioned into the U.S. Navy.
“The Navy invested 9-million dollars in this boat in World War II”, the President of the Cod Memorial, Paul Farace, said. “She fulfilled her mission, but she’s been constantly in service to our nation since then, so this is the greatest representation of a good investment.”
Navy veteran Rob Wickham and his wife Erica are in Cleveland for their honeymoon and made it a point to see the Cod.
“As a Navy veteran, I think it’s a big thing,” Wickham said. “She’d never seen a submarine, so I thought, let’s come down, see the submarine; like I said, it’s been 25 years since I’ve seen the Cod, and it’s just a great thing to do.”
Commissioned June 21, 1943, the U.S.S. Cod was built to defend Americans years ago. It still teaches and inspires them today.
“The public is the reason the Cod exists,” Farace said.
